We are officially "First-and-a-half" graders now!  :)  Can you believe we are half-way through the year??  Time flies when you're having fun...and we are.  :)

I am going to start assigning some flashcard practice as part of their nightly homework.  I am noticing on their speed drills that some of the children are having trouble keeping up and completing the drills.  Some extra practice on addition/subtraction would be great for all of them.  No more than 5-10 minutes (use your discretion on where your child is) each night that homework is assigned.  Of course we still practice at school, too.  :)  Thanks!!

Dates to Remember:

Feb. 17 -- ACSI Spelling Bee at Rock Church Academy in Petersburg (this is a change from the school's website)

Feb. 20 -- No School for students, Parent-Teacher Conferences

Feb. 27-- International Night -- details to come soon!  :)

Here is what we are doing this week:

Bible: The theme of kindness and sharing is our topic this week, seen through a boy and a widow sharing what little they had out of love for Jesus.

Phonics: We are having lots of fun with our spelling words!  They are loving the games we play to practice them.  In regards to their spelling homework, I only need the bottom half returned.  The top half should be cut off and kept at home for them to study with you throughout the week.  Test on Wednesday (2/8).

Reading: We are settled in nicely to reading groups.  The kids are doing pretty well sounding out the words.  We are working on adding good expression and paying attention.  This is graded weekly.

Math:  We will expand on our skills with the clock, adding 5 min. increments of time, subtracting with coins, and of course lots of review!  Most of us are doing a great job learning our facts, but it would be good to have a set of flashcards they can practice at home with.  You can usually find them at the Dollar Tree.  Test on Tuesday (2/7).

Writing: We are working on how to construct good sentences and short paragraphs, as well as practicing some of our letters.  The big thing I stress is neatness and taking time to do THEIR best.

Science: We will take the next several weeks to dive into the human body and discuss how wonderfully and perfectly God designed us, starting with TEETH.  :)
