In January, we will be learning about all kinds of animals, ending with a Polar Project.

Dr. Olenic (Natalie’s dad) will be bringing us animals to study!

/files/UpLoads/First Grade pix/word sorting!.jpgSpelling Corner:  Note for Jan 5-9:  The regular words for this week were the challenge words last time. Several students that had these challenge words last time did not earn the challenge words this week, so they will have almost the same spelling list as before. Only three will have the challenge words this week; take it as a relaxing week of review.

Red words: which, skin, crab, drip, done, wipe, tide, mule, slice, stroke and January.

Blue words: kick, take, look, bike, sick, spoke, truck, like, smoke, book, and January.

Spelling words:  Make sure your child has his/her Spelling journal. If the words are not on the web, they are in their journals, ion Monday, and in ABC order, by Wednesday.

On Monday, we will pretest, and I'll divide up the groups. We'll cut out our sorts, and they will go home that night. (and be posted.) They should sort their words into the sounds studied, then they can resort any way they want! Be creative; some will sort by initial letter, or category!  The whole idea is to get them to look at the patterns, and really SEE the words visually. This helps different kinds of learners: visual as well as kids who need to handle and manipulate the sorts to learn.

Tuesday, in class, we will put the words in ABC order, and write them in our Spelling journals. This way, you will have a written list of your child's words early in the week. Study your sorts by resorting for HW.

Wednesday, we re-sort and write the words on index cards. With partners, they resort and put them in ABC order again. (Some teachers give a midweek test, give me your ideas on this. Will this help?) Study your sorts by resorting for HW.

Thursday, we do various word sort games and activities with the lists. Sometimes we finger spell them, or do Karate Spelling. They have some sort of HW page with spelling on it to help study. Ae as review on Friday morning.

Friday morning, first thing, we glgain, their list should be in their Spelling journals, so you don't have to look at the sorts to study. Please do not glue down the sorts; this is donue down the sorts in our journals to review, then test.

Math: doing great!!!! on the doubles facts.  I'm impressed. Now we're doing plus/minus one facts as well.

Keep up the good work.

Carter will be SuperStar of the Week. We will start a new rotation of students. Don’t feel that you need to necessarily bring something special; you may if you wish.
