Psalms 119:13-16
This week in Second Grade:
Monday: Music
Tuesday: PE (tennis shoes, please!)
Wednesday: Computer
Thursday: Art and Library
Friday: Spanish
Please try to remember library books; Mrs. Starkey is only in on Thursday, so we can't turn them in other days. Thanks!
Social Studies: Working on the Plains tribes. These three tribes are aligned with the VA SOLs for 2nd grade.
(these kids should be smiling, right?!)
Reading: We are speeding through these readers. And loving them! They tell old stories, fables, and great Biblical principles. If both parents haven't heard the student read, listen this week! They are good stories, and these kids are great readers!
I have new things in the treasure box, so get on those Reading Logs. Don't forget you can use your Abeka reading!
If I send home the novel they are reading, it's just to let you know what is being read in afternoon reading. This does not have to be read aloud. These books are above grade level and more for me to test comprehension. The kids are doing so well, and enjoying "real" books.
The Turtles are reading "The Sword in the Tree" for afternoon novel study.
The Robins and Dolphins are reading "Mummies in the Morning" a Magic Tree House book about Egypt. This is going so well!
Tips for reading practice: Have your child read "as if talking", the goal being smooth, fluent reading. Watch out for punctuation, and the end of the line is not always the end of the sentence! Many are reading well, but some are still sounding "mechanical" and not natural. Another hint is to make sure they say "uh" for the work "a", as in "a cat." "Uh cat" puts more emphasis on the noun cat, rather than equal emphasis on "ay" cat. The other sound is "the". Try for "thuh" rather than "thee". Again it sounds more smooth and fluent, rather than choppy and mechanical, each word sounding the same.
The students are receiving an oral reading grade each Wednesday. There seems to be no other reading grade work, so this will be their interim/report card grade for reading at this point. Actually makes sense.
We will be reading assigned pages each night according to reading groups. Please have your child read the passage twice quietly to themselves, then once to you.
Obviously, we'd like the books to stay in pretty good shape and not get lost. Each book is marked with a number, not a name. Hopefully we will use them more than one year.
With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your
mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.I
meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I
will not neglect your word.
Second Grade
Baskets for Spring Fling!!! Ours will
be the best, of course. Bring donations to class or to Sheila Gillen.
Our basket is VT vs UVA. Bring team shirts, cups, anything cool from one of the teams. We are hoping that the competition will get a great price for the basket and the school!
Spring is almost here!![]() ![]() ![]() e |

Math: Three-digit subtraction, with renaming. Not easy. We also check with "adding up". This chapter will be done next week.
Bible: Verses in Psalm 119. Ask your child about the Plagues. We are having a hilarious time acting all of these out. Let me go get the pictures...
Spelling going well. Super Spellers! Social Studies: Working on the Plains tribes. These three tribes are aligned with the VA SOLs for 2nd grade.

On a sad note, Kiki will be attending Seven Pines Elementary for the remainder of the year. We pray that she will be so happy. We will miss our Keeks, that's for sure.
